Sarah Sherman Wins Late-Night Halloween Costume Contest

Sarah Sherman’s “head on a platter” costume took the cake Halloween night on late night TV.

The Saturday Night Live cast member and perfect Halloween guest went all out for her second Tonight Show appearance, wearing a get-up that made her head look like the centerpiece of a bedazzled fruit platter. Her dress resembled a classic red-and-white checkered picnic blanket (peppered with plastic ants), and she topped the whole look off with an oversized fork protruding from her head.

She credited SNL costume designers Ashley Dudek and Samuel Bennett with the creation of the costume, saying, “[they] did an amazing job making this, and now stick a fork in me ’cause I’m done.”

Intentionally or not, the costume also recalled Sherman’s famous severed head prop, which has been used in three pretaped SNL sketches over the past year. It was last seen as a serial killer’s refrigerated trophy in October 12’s “My Best Friend’s House.”

The highlight of Sherman’s Halloween interview with Jimmy Fallon was her use of a sound effects machine to tell a couple of “scary” stories about receiving mammogram results and using a multi-stall bathroom. In addition to featuring sounds like thunder and goblin laughter, the machine included about half a dozen different screams, such as a “classic existential scream” and “a woman screaming because she just saw her friend, Rebecca.”

As far as our makeshift late night costume contest goes, Sherman didn’t have a heck of a lot of competition. Second place would have to go to another Fallon guest, Anthony Mackie, who showed up in a replica of the “Gordon Gartrell” shirt worn by Malcolm-Jamal Warner in an early episode of The Cosby Show.

Late Night with Seth Meyers guest Mika Brzezinski opted for a simple “I’m a voter” shirt, while the usually dressed-down Meyers wore a suit while guesting on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. When asked by Colbert if he would be wearing the suit on his own show later in the evening, Meyers replied, “No. By the way, my dad is so excited when I’m on your show, because this is how he wants me to dress on my show… I’m casual now… I’m like a guy who’s barely caring.”

Earning honorable mention is Colbert’s Instagram post showcasing his dog, Benny, in a Fat Bear Week costume with the caption, “Wishing you a beary scary Howl-oween.”
