Sarah Sherman’s ‘Severed Head’ Makes Third SNL Appearance

This weekend’s Saturday Night Live sketch “My Best Friend’s House” may have marked the first “SNL Midnight Matinee,” but it was the third time Sarah Sherman’s severed head has made an appearance in a sketch.

This time around, Sherman’s head is found on ther shelf of the titular best friend’s freezer—a victim of her serial killer dad. Sherman’s fatal accidents last year came in very different ways—although they were just as memorable.

The SNL star first lost her head when playing tennis star Charna Lee Diamond in the parody documentary sketch “UNTOLD: Battle of the Sexes.” That beheading came at the hand of host Jason Momoa, who knocked off her head with a (literal) breakneck serve.

Then came Sherman’s appearance in “Scooby-Doo,” a gory pre-taped sketch with host Jake Gyllenhaal in which Sherman is clotheslined by a piano wire. For that, the SNL effects team appeared to reuse the same severed head prop.

In “My Best Friend’s House,” it appears Sherman simply played her own cranium. But the comedian still memorialized the occasion on her Instagram.

“SNL Severed Head Count: 3,” she wrote, adding “🔪🧊 Frozen Edition 🧊🔪”

Sherman, also known as Sarah Squirm, joined SNL in 2021. Known for her surreal body horror comedy, she has made a name for herself by bringing that sensibility to Saturday Night Live. All of which is to say this may not be the last we’ll see of Sherman’s head on the show.
