Jelly Roll Tearfully ‘Sets the Record Straight’ on Kimmel

After spending the week getting hammered by conservative commentators for making jokes about Donald Trump, Jelly Roll answered his critics Thursday night—not with another punchline, but with an emotional explanation of his politics, his faith, and why people shouldn’t read too much into a photo of him with the president.

On his fourth and final night guest-hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the country star first acknowledged the strange political journey he’s been on over the last few days.

“Before this week, everybody thought I was MAGA and now they think I’m some sort of liberal snowflake,” he joked.

Jelly Roll has long resisted publicly identifying with either political party, though many assumed he was a Trump supporter after he was photographed greeting the president in 2024. This week’s repeated jokes at Trump’s expense apparently scrambled that perception for some conservative commentators.

To illustrate the backlash, Jelly Roll played a clip of a Fox News commentator accusing him of having “full-blown TDS,” branding him a “phony,” and suggesting Hollywood money had motivated his Trump jokes.

“First of all, I didn’t do this for the check. I’m rich, y’all,” Jelly Roll cracked.

But he also made clear that posting about enjoying the White House UFC event—and shaking Trump’s hand—shouldn’t be interpreted as blanket support for the administration.

“Just because I watched a fight on TV doesn’t mean I support everything this administration does,” he said. “Just like hosting Jimmy Kimmel’s show doesn’t mean I have all of Jimmy Kimmel’s politics.”

“Sure, I lean left on some things, but like most folks, I’m pretty down the middle,” he added. “I am a Christian. I am a country music singer. I’m a farmer. I’m a bow hunter.”

After joking about how much he had enjoyed working with the “Chihuahua-hugging, oat milk latte-loving lefties” on Kimmel’s staff, Jelly Roll signaled that he wanted to get serious.

“This year it wasn’t the hosting gig that I was looking forward to,” he said. “It was the platform to get some very personal stuff off of my chest.”

He explained that he had spent the last six months watching strangers decide “who I am, what I am, what I believe, what I support, and what I don’t support.”

Much of that, he said, dated back to February, when he won his first Grammy Awards and was immediately asked to weigh in on politics.

Jelly Roll said he hesitated at the time because he feared anything he said would be turned into a partisan statement.

“I spent my entire career trying not to belong to a political party,” he said. “Partly because until March of this year, I wasn’t even allowed to vote.”

Now that his voting rights have been restored, he said, he plans to exercise them this November.

Still, Jelly Roll said his larger mission has less to do with political parties than with speaking for people whose lives resemble the one he lived before becoming famous.

“I always wanted the recovering addict, the felon who is trying to change his life, the single mama working a double hard for her family, and everybody else that ever felt forgotten to know that I represent those without representation,” he said.

Looking back at his post-Grammy comments, Jelly Roll said he wished he had been quicker to articulate that.

“I had a microphone and I didn’t use it the right way,” he said.

“Human dignity isn’t Republican nor Democrat. Compassion isn’t left-wing and mercy isn’t right-wing,” he continued. “Hurting hearts are more important than poll numbers.”

Jelly Roll then pointed to his own life as a convicted felon who was given the opportunity to rebuild himself, become a successful musician and eventually win three Grammys.

“This country gave me room and a chance to become something more than the biggest and worst mistake I ever made,” he said.

“The American dream can’t just be for people like me,” he continued. “Second chances, grace, dignity, opportunity. It can’t just be for people like me.”

He tied that belief directly to his Christian faith, invoking Jesus’ command to “love your neighbor as yourself.”

“There wasn’t an asterisk after neighbor,” Jelly Roll said. “There wasn’t a political party exemption. It did not require us to know what country you were born in.”

He also addressed one of the biggest sources of confusion surrounding his own politics: his willingness to greet Trump.

Jelly Roll said his late father, a Marine veteran, would have expected him to show respect to whoever occupied the Oval Office.

“I will always shake the hand of the sitting president of the United States when asked,” he said. “I’m proud that I was able to shake the president of the United States’ hand. I’m also proud that I live in a country where I can make jokes about him.”

“A handshake is not an endorsement,” he added. “A conversation is not an allegiance and a joke is not a political point of view.”

Jelly Roll grew most emotional while talking about his father, whom he described as a Democrat, and his father’s brother, a Republican. Despite their political disagreements, he said, the two men remained lifelong best friends.

While his father was in hospice, Jelly Roll asked him how they had managed it.

“Son, we agreed about hundreds of things,” he recalled his father telling him. “We only didn’t agree about a few things, and we were not going to let the few things we didn’t agree about define our entire relationship.”

Jelly Roll said he has been thinking about that lesson amid a political culture in which “politicians and algorithms make an absolute fortune convincing us that the person across the street from us is the reason our life is hard.”

“The person across the street from us is a human being before they’re a voter,” he said.

He acknowledged that speaking so openly this week hadn’t necessarily been comfortable.

“It hasn’t been easy being on this show this week,” Jelly Roll said. “I knew what kind of a storm I was going to cause and I was okay with that because I told myself I would never be so afraid of being called political again that I didn’t say what I know is right.”

By the end of the monologue, Jelly Roll was visibly fighting back tears as he returned to the lesson his father had taught him.

“I hope that tonight while he’s looking down from heaven, I made him proud,” he said.

Going to an event on the front lawn of the White House that you were invited to means you identify as MAGA, otherwise you wouldn’t have been invited. Having your picture taken with THIS President IS an endorsement, otherwise you wouldn’t have had your picture taken with him.

    1. Stan Harris says:

No, it doesn’t. I would’ve gone if I was invited and I’m a democrat who can’t stand Trump.

      1. Mark DuPriest says:

It is enabling whether you admit it or not.

Dear Mr. Roll your comment has been duly noted and I will never listen to any of your music again. I will also encourage all my friends and family to do the same. I here you bragging about not doing this for a check and being Rich. Let’s put that to the test I’m hoping that every single like minded patriot does the same so that your ability to earn a living in the music industry is depleted and your wealth is destroyed.

Belly Roll forgot that he is an entertainer who profits by reaching a broad based audience. He got caught up in the moment thinking that what he has to say on a personal level has great Import. It does not. Nobody cares what a singer “thinks.” Just ask Bruce Springstein. In Business, the market ultimately decides.

      2. Jelly Roll knows who he is! says:

Whereas you are a Drumpf licking loser who’s become a pariah in society for slurping up to that criminal racist sexist pedophile!

You’re nothing but a turd in the punchbowl that thinks its shit don’t stink, when in reality, you reek, bitch! Do you do it to copy your Dear Toddler, bitch?

Belly Roll is an ex-con. They rarely can change their behaivor whether they “find” Jesus or not. He is a hustler. Those who live by the hustle, “die” by the hustle.

      1. Your Dear Toddler Drumpf is a convicted sex pest, loser! says:

You’re in no fucking position to determine who deserves redemption or not! So I suggest you curl up into a ball, stick your ugly head up your fat ass, and go bowling, bitch hole!

      2. feggy says:

You love a certain “position” when you take up your tookus. Sorry, sex toys do not count as the real thing. Nobody likes you. Remember that. You are a LOSER! With a capital “L” on your face. Redeem this.

      3. Is that what you think, bitch? says:

      1. feggy says:

I am sorry that your mother’s breast milk nearly drowned you as an infant. Not really.

      2. Your mother regreted not aborting you, bitch! says:
