Beastie Boys co-founder Mike D is set for a prominent booking when The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon returns from a two-week break next Tuesday.
Mike D is currently the only interview guest listed for Fallon’s Sept. 8 episode, while his new band Mike D 5D is booked as the night’s musical guest.
The appearance will mark Mike D’s first solo visit to Fallon and his first time performing on the show.
He has visited with Fallon before, once when the Beasties appeared on Late Night in 2009, and twice alongside fellow Beastie Boy Ad-Rock on The Tonight Show.
Fallon is an avowed Beastie Boys fan. When Mike D and Ad-Rock visited in 2018 to promote Beastie Boys Book, the host dug up an old home video of himself as a high-schooler lip-syncing “So What’cha Want.” He also presented the pair with boom boxes loaded with mixtapes assembled by Questlove.
Mike D and Ad-Rock returned remotely in 2020 to promote the Spike Jonze-directed Beastie Boys Story, with Questlove joining Fallon for a conversation that at times played more like a Beasties appreciation session than a standard promotional interview.
This time, Mike D has new music of his own to promote. His Tonight Show appearance comes on the heels of the Aug. 28 release of Thank You, his first solo album, recorded with Mike D 5D.
The band, which includes his sons Skyler and Davis Diamond, made its television debut earlier this summer on BBC’s Later… with Jools Holland, performing “Switch Up” and “What We Got.”
Tuesday’s performance will mark the band’s U.S. late-night debut.
