Melania Trump is calling on ABC to “take a stand” against Jimmy Kimmel, after the late night host joked about the First Lady looking like “an expectant widow” days before an armed man would attempt to breach an event attended by her and President Donald Trump.
On the April 23 Jimmy Kimmel Live!, with no comedian (but a mentalist) hired as featured entertainer at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, Kimmel seized the opportunity to deliver the monologue that might have been.
Among the many zingers Kimmel aimed at the dinner guests (represented in cutaways by archival event clips), Kimmel said, “Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.”
Two nights later at the actual White House Correspondents’ dinner, Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, Calif., was apprehended on-scene after attempting to charge past a security checkpoint one floor above the ballroom where the Trumps and other administration VIPs were dining. Allen was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and knives.
Seemingly clocking the unfortunate juxtaposiition of events, Melania Trump posted to X Monday morning, “Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy— his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.
“People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate,” the First Lady continued. “A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him.”
It was eight months ago that ABC yanked Jimmy Kimmel Live off its schedule indefinitely after FCC chair Brendan Carr pressured affiliates to drop the show over Kimmel appearing to intimate in a monologue that Charlie Kirk’s shooter was MAGA.
After a groundswell of viewer support for Kimmel, and after what were reported to be intense negoatiations between Kimmel, Disney CEO Bob Iger and Disney Entertainment Co-Chair Dana Walden, Kimmel was ultimately reinstated. At the time, the Walt Disney Co. explained that it benched Kimmel “because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive.” But after “thoughtful conversations with Jimmy… we reached the decision to return the show.”
What’s more, ABC and Kimmel six weeks later announced a one-year contract extension (though that deal reportedly had been hammered out over the summer).
As of March 18, however, The Walt Disney Co. has a new CEO, Josh D’Amaro—to whom Melania perhaps was appealing.
“Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand,” her social media post asserted. “How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community.”
LateNighter has reached out to Disney-ABC for comment on the First Lady’s social media post.
