Ego Nwodim Set to Host 2026 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Hot off netting her first Critics Choice Award nomination (for her Saturday Night Live farewell run), Ego Nwodim has been tapped to host the 2026 Film Independent Spirit Awards.

Film Independent’s primary fundraiser for its year-round slate of programs, the Spirit Awards recognize the best of independent cinema and television.

“No stage celebrates the incredible work of these visionary artists and independent creators everywhere quite like the Spirit Awards,” Nwodim said in a statement. “I can’t wait to join Film Independent for an afternoon of fun, laughs and a few surprises.” 

Said Brenda Robinson, the acting president of Film Independent, “We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Ego Nwodim joining us…. Ego has entertained audiences with her sharp wit and genius comedic timing for many years and we’re excited to make her a part of Film Independent history.”

Nominations for the 2026 Spirit Awards were revealed December 3; winners will be announced Sunday, February 15, at a 2 p.m. PT ceremony held at the Hollywood Palladium and streamed live on the Film Independent and IMDbYouTube channels.

Past Spirit Awards hosts include SNL vets Aidy Bryant, Melissa Villaseñor, Kate McKinnon and Fred Armisen, as well as Hasan Minhaj, Megan Mullaly and Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Kumail Nanjiani, Kristen Bell, Patton Oswalt, Andy Samberg, Rainn Wilson, Joel McHale, Sarah Silverman, Samuel L. Jackson, Queen Latifah and John Waters.

Since announcing her SNL departure, Nwodim has appeared in ads for fitness brand Solidcore and beauty brand Merit (alongside fellow SNL alum Heidi Gardner), made her Off-Broadway debut with a solo comedy show, joined the cast of Mindy Kaling’s upcoming Hulu comedy Not Suitable For Work, and landed a voice role in Pixar”s upcoming Hoppers.

    1) held at The Hollywood Palladium? What? Are you seriously killing the tradition of under a tent at the Santa Monica Pier???
    2) streaming for free on YouTube is great, but that pathetic/destroyed IFC (you know…Independent Film Channel) should resume televising their own awards show.
