“Indecision 2024” is living up to its name, as The Daily Show has made yet another change to this week’s programming.
On Sunday, in the wake of Saturday’s attempted assassination of Donald Trump, The Daily Show quietly announced that it was canceling its plans to spend this week broadcasting from the Republican National Convention. On Monday afternoon, they clued viewers into yet another change: Jon Stewart will be hosting the show on Tuesday night versus his previously planned live show from Milwaukee on Thursday.
The “announcement” came from a social media post that stated: “Tuesday night: Jon Stewart hosts an all-new episode of The Daily Show,” and included a link to request tickets to be part of the audience in the show’s permanent home in New York City.
While it’s possible that Stewart could host a second episode this week on Thursday, it’s unlikely. The ticketing page for The Daily Show generally notes which episode is being hosted by Stewart, as it does for Tuesday’s show (which is already sold out). Neither Wednesday nor Thursday’s shows list Stewart as the host. As of Monday, the taping time for all of this week’s shows is the usual 4:30 p.m. ET, leading us to report that there would be no live show. But on Tuesday, Comedy Central confirmed that the post-RNC live episode will go ahead as planned on Thursday (we’re just not sure who will be hosting it).
So far, no one from The Daily Show or Comedy Central has spoken out about the decision to abandon their RNC plans. The initial announcement also came via social media and stated that “Due to logistical issues and the evolving situation in Milwaukee, we need to reschedule our events on the ground in Wisconsin and will look to make those up in the coming weeks.”
While we won’t have a new episode of The Daily Show tonight, all eyes and ears will be on Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers in particular—plus Jimmy Fallon and Anthony Anderson, who is guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week—to see how they approach the events of the past few days. And not just the attack on Trump, but the Monday morning dismissal of Trump’s classified documents case, the first day of the RNC, and the announcement that J.D. Vance will be Trump’s running mate.
On that last matter, The Daily Show did break its silence to weigh in:
