While this week’s Republican National Convention will reportedly go ahead as planned, with Donald Trump in attendance, The Daily Show has announced that it has canceled its plans to offer on-the-ground reporting from the event.
In a message posted to their social media accounts, The Best F**king News Team announced that they have canceled Monday’s show altogether but will be back on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, reporting on the RNC from their Manhattan studio.
“Due to logistical issues and the evolving situation in Milwaukee, we need to reschedule our events on the ground in Wisconsin and will look to make those up in the coming weeks.”
Though Daily Show producers did not explicitly state that the change of plans was made as a result of the assassination attempt made against Trump on Saturday, it’s not a huge leap to interpret the “evolving situation” as being related to just that.
On Sunday, Trump shared a message on Truth Social that: “Based on yesterday’s terrible events, I was going to delay my trip to Wisconsin, and The Republican National Convention, by two days, but have just decided that I cannot allow a ‘shooter,’ or potential assassin, to force change to scheduling, or anything else. Therefore, I will be leaving for Milwaukee, as scheduled, at 3:30 p.m. TODAY.”
The Daily Show had planned to kick off its week of planned activities with its latest InDogCision event—a joint voter registration and dog adoption event, which was scheduled to take place at the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC). On Sunday afternoon, the organization announced that this event, too, has been canceled.
There’s no word yet on whether Jon Stewart still plans to host a live post-convention episode on Thursday.
The next new episode of The Daily Show will air on Tuesday, July 16 at 11 pm ET.
