Roy Wood Jr. Sets New Standup Special at Hulu

Hulu is adding a Daily Show veteran to its comedy roster.

Deadline reports that former Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. is set to record a new standup special for Hulu in September. The performance will go down at Washington, DC’s Lincoln Theatre.

A title and release date for Wood’s new special have not yet been announced, but it comes as Hulu prepares to launch its new comedy arm, “Hulu’s Laughing Now.” The streamer has already recruited comics like Jim Gaffigan and Bill Burr to build out its stable of stars.

The new special will be Wood’s fourth, but his first for the streamer. The comedian has recorded three hours for Comedy Central: Father Figure (2017), No One Loves You (2019), and Imperfect Messenger (2021). Comedy Central has made each of those specials available in full on its YouTube channel.

Wood made his network standup debut on The Late Show with David Letterman back in 2006. He joined The Daily Show as a correspondent in 2015, under then-full-time host Jon Stewart. Last year, Wood took his standup skills to Washington, hosting the 2023 White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Since leaving The Daily Show in October 2023, Wood was cast in Jonah Hill’s new movie Outcome, sold a memoir, cameoed on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and hosted the baseball history podcast Road to Rickwood.

The director of Imperfect Messenger, c. Craig, will return to helm Wood’s new special. In addition to Hulu, international rights for Wood’s new hour go to Disney+.

Wood will tape the special over two shows on September 7 at 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm. Tickets are available now.
