Lorne Michaels was just nominated for a Golden Globe… as a character.
Nominations for this year’s Golden Globe Awards were announced Monday morning, and the actor who played Michaels in Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night Live biopic earned a nod. Actor Gabrielle LaBelle was nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for his turn in Saturday Night, marking the young but acclaimed actor’s first nomination at the Globes.
In Saturday Night, LaBelle plays a 30-year-old Michaels in the frenzied 90 minutes before the first-ever broadcast of SNL.
Apart from LaBelle’s nomination, Saturday Night was shut out of the Globes, despite starring a deep cast who channeled SNL’s original Not Ready for Prime Time Players to generally rave reviews. The film also features some big names in supporting roles, including J. K. Simmons, Cooper Hoffman, and Willem Dafoe.
While the real Michaels executive produced Tina Fey’s Golden Globe-winning comedy series 30 Rock, he hasn’t yet taken home a Golden Globe statue himself. Unlike the Emmys, the Golden Globes don’t have a category dedicated to sketch or variety specials, despite covering both film and TV.
Although Reitman’s Saturday Night may not have a big presence at the award show, LaBelle will be in the room with at least two former SNL stars. Seth Meyers scored his first-ever Golden Globe nomination Monday morning for his new HBO stand-up comedy special, Seth Meyers: Dad Man Walking, and Adam Sandler was nominated for his Netflix special Love You.
The Golden Globe Awards will air on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025 on CBS, with comedian Nikki Glaser serving as host.
