A new music duo took a New York City subway platform by storm yesterday: Ed Sheeran and Jimmy Fallon.
Though it has yet to air on The Tonight Show, cell phone video footage captured by lucky commuters shows Sheeran and Fallon performing at the Rockefeller Center subway station—a spot where Fallon has staged a handful of disguised “Subway Busking” performances for The Tonight Show over the last ten years.
Yesterday was no different, as Sheeran and Fallon first appeared in their best emo getups to sing a cover of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club.”
After losing their disguises, Fallon backed up Sheeran on tambourine while the musician played his upcoming single, “Azizam.”
That track is slated for an April 4th release, part of a new full-length album due sometime later this year. Sheeran also used his interview spot on The Tonight Show last night to quell fan speculation about the upcoming record’s title, revealing it will be called Play.
The Tonight Show dropped its own sneak peek online last night, ahead of Sheeran’s in-studio appearance on the show. Fallon also mentioned the busking gig in his interview with Sheeran, promising viewers they will “see it eventually, when we edit it together.”
Fallon last did a “Subway Busking” package just two months ago, when Bad Bunny co-hosted The Tonight Show. Fallon accompanied Bad Bunny on a few of the musician’s original songs, plus a cover of Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way”.
