Oscars host. Soap star. Now Conan O’Brien can add “metal musician” to his post-late-night resume.
In September, O’Brien welcomed Katherina, a fan from Austria, onto his Conan O’Brien Needs A Fan podcast spin-off. During the chat, he asked whether he’s qualified to be a guest vocalist in her “slush metal” band, Cringe Blizzard.
Now that idea has become a reality. The former late-night host shared on social media Thursday night that he’d just completed his performance—joking that he gave himself in a hernia in the process.
O’Brien appears to be in Austria to film another episode of his Max travel series, Conan O’Brien Must Go. Austrian media outlet VOL.AT caught up with O’Brien and confirmed the concert performance. Conan producer/nemesis Jordan Schlansky is apparently there, too.
You can see a clip of O’Brien rocking out—and baring his stomach—to an excited Austrian crowd here:

Earlier, a poster for the Cringe Blizzard show surfaced online. Even if you don’t read German, the message was pretty clear. If the artwork of O’Brien’s head (with his eyes censored) wasn’t enough of a giveaway, the text below it was: “Special Guest: Conan O’Brien.” A QR code alongside the tease links to the CONAFan episode’s page on the Team Coco website.
“After Kaddl, the singer from Cringe Blizzard, appeared on his podcast, the late-night star is now taking the stage in person,” a translated version of the caption reads. The band also shared a clip filled with Conan easter eggs showing Cringe Blizzard practicing for the performance.
You can watch Katharina’s appearance on Conan’s podcast below:
O’Brien’s show with Cringe Blizzard went down at 7 p.m. local time. But fans who missed it needn’t worry—it’s likely footage from the gig will make its way into the next season of Conan O’Brien Must Go.
While the series was renewed for a new season of six episodes in May, a premiere date has not yet been announced. We do know, however, that other episodes will find the host traveling to Spain and New Zealand, where he recorded a role as a surgeon on a local soap opera.
Much like appearing on local soaps, O’Brien’s guest stints in fans’ bands abroad is becoming a pattern for the former late-night host. In the first season of Conan O’Brien Must Go, he joined rap duo E.D.A onstage during his trip to Norway. O’Brien also joined the band in the studio to lay down guest vocals and appeared in their music video.
