What would an all-time best, all-star episode of Saturday Night Live look like?
A brand-new digital series from the show itself aims to answer that question.
SNL‘s digital team just launched The Rundown, a new short-form series that invites cast members, alumni, and famous superfans to stop by Studio 8H and hand-pick their favorite sketches from the series’ storied 50-year history to add to a blank rundown board.
The Rundown‘s premiere (embedded above) finds SNL writer and “Weekend Update” co-anchor Colin Jost breaking down the Cold Open writing process before choosing—from a corkboard full of memorable options—the sketch he’d use to open this “fantasy” episode.
Other current cast members, including Mikey Day and Chloe Fineman, as well as alumni Dana Carvey and Bowen Yang, plus Questlove (Tonight Show bandleader and co-director of Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music), are among the others who will have a say in this “all-star episode.”
Which Cold Open is Jost’s pick? Is it Steve Martin’s famous “Not Gonna Phone It In Tonight”? Melissa McCarthy’s debut as short-fused White House press secretary Sean Spicer? Press play above to find out.
The Rundown will release new episodes Wednesdays during SNL‘s hiatus weeks, through mid-June. Episodes will be available on Peacock, SNL’s YouTube channel, and the show’s social media accounts.
SNL resumes its 51st season Saturday, April 4, with the inspired host/musical guest pairing of Jack Black and Jack White.
