Bowen Yang Makes the Only Possible ‘Update’ Pick for All-Time SNL Rundown
The Rundown now officially has everything.
In the third episode of Saturday Night Live‘s new digital short series that releases updates during dark weeks—former cast member Bowen Yang is tasked with choosing one of more than three dozen “Weekend Update” features to add to the show’s all-time, all-star “fantasy” episode lineup.
In The Rundown‘s premiere, SNL writer/“Update” co-anchor Colin Jost broke down the Cold Open writing process before picking—from a cork board full of memorable options—the sketch he’d use to kick off this “fantasy” episode: Season 34’s CBS News interview between Katie Couric (played by Amy Poehler) and Sarah Palin (Tina Fey).
In Episode 2, SNL alum Dana Carvey surveyed and discussed dozens of great options before choosing the “Wayne’s World” installment featuring Aerosmith to lead out of the monologue.
Now it’s time to handpick one “Update” segment, from a vast array of iconic options including Roseanne Roseannadanna, Father Guido Sarducci, “Opera Man,” and the “Trend Forecasters” (played by Yang and Aidy Bryant). Before he locks in on one, Yang goes deep on the philosophy behind “Update” features—how they can give the show a “boost” heading into the back half, or “drag the whole thing down” (which he jokes about having done himself).
But really, there’s no decision to be made here. After all, who else but SNL alum Bill Hader and former writer John Mulaney have given the world Human Fire Hydrants, Hobocops, leprechauns that look like Farrah Fawcett, Bark Ruffalo, and so, so much more…?
Press play above to see which iconic “Update” feature Yang chooses to join this all-time fantasy episode.
