As anticipation builds for tonight’s premiere of Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney, we’ve got a first look inside the studio and it looks… familiar.
The sneak peek comes courtesy of Richard Kind, the show’s sidekick/announcer, who posted three photos of the show’s set to Facebook.
It appears John Mulaney is bringing back much of the same set from his original Netflix talk show, John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA. The new set features the same brown leather guest couch, flanked by the same two patterned sofa chairs from its Los Angeles-themed predecessor.
It’s no surprise that Mulaney would keep those chairs. Last year, the host revealed that they had been designed by production designer Andrea Purcigliotti after a particularly specific request.
“I said they should be deep and high,” Mulaney explained. “A lot of shows that I’ve been on have shallow furniture so it’s easier to sit up straight. And I wanted deep chairs.”
One front-and-center change the show has made: a new coffee table. The production has swapped the original Bridgevine Home coffee table for a larger, two-tiered piece in a darker wood.
Also returning are the wood paneling, stained glass, and other lighting elements seen on Everybody’s in LA. Those elements support an overall vibe for the set that actually harkens back to the home of another late-night host: Johnny Carson’s Malibu pad. Mulaney reflected on the inspiration in an interview with Vanity Fair last year, describing “A lot of brutalist gold things, plus grapes. Glass grapes are wonderful.”
Kind’s photos indicate that, yes, the glass grapes are also back.
The decision not to build a new set might also signal that Netflix is keeping what worked from Mulaney’s original show. While the new program will take a broader focus than Los Angeles, Mulaney has implied that the format will stay the same—meaning Everybody’s Live may amount more to a title change than a brand new show.
Kind’s behind-the-scenes shots also reveal the stage setup for Mulaney’s musical guest, hip hop group Cypress Hill, set against an extra large sign with the band’s logo.
In addition to Cypress Hill, the new(ish) set’s first visitors will include actors Michael Keaton and Fred Armisen, musician Joan Baez, and personal finance columnist Jessica Roy.
