Viewers tuning into Late Night with Seth Meyers tonight to see how the host reacts to Donald Trump’s threatening Truth Social post earlier today will likely be disappointed.
While hosts like Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and Meyers have made sport of responding to the once and future president’s attacks on their shows (and occasionally in near-real time), Late Night tapes two episodes on Mondays—one for Monday and one for Tuesday. So tonight’s episode was already in the can when Trump lashed out at Meyers in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
Although it’s possible that a cold open or something else was prepared today in response to Trump’s post, we’ll more likely have to wait til Wednesday to see what (if anything) the host has to say.
As we’ve previously reported, Trump called Meyers a “moron,” “dumb and untalented,” and “merely a slot filler” in a post published to his social media platform at 1:24am this morning while Meyers’ Monday night show was still airing. The president-elect went on to declare that NBC’s parent company Comcast should “pay a BIG price” for shows like his, which he termed “political hits.”
It wasn’t immediately clear what set specifically set Trump off on Meyers—although we have some theories.
In any case, Meyers finds himself in something of a precarious position. If history is any guide, he’ll want to respond, but with Trump vowing retribution against his perceived enemies when he begins his second term (and in this case stating explicitly that Comcast should be sanctioned over Meyers), there will almost certainly be some at NBC who would argue now is not the time to poke the bear.
We’ll find out where they land Wednesday night.
Everyone trump defamed in the last four years should be filing the lawsuits now, before he’s actually a president again. He can look forward to all the cases becoming active again the minute he’s out of office.
Let him stew in it.
