Was there ever really a bet? We may never know, but after over a month of hyping up his Jets-Steelers bet with a late night staffer, Seth Meyers didn’t give us the payoff we’d hoped for.
As we’ve been chronicling in misguided detail, it was during a during a September edition of “Corrections” that Seth Meyers—a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan— first mentioned his wager with Kenny Coyle, a Late Night utility grip and New York Jets devotee over last Sunday’s Steelers-Jets game. The two teams have a longstanding rivalry, and last went head-to-head in 2022.
As Meyers described it, the bet was as follows: If the Jets won, the host would place a mug featuring the final score on his desk for the rest of the football season. If the Steelers won, Coyle would get a tattoo of the score and his boss’ signature on his arm. Uneven? Sure—but that didn’t seem to bother Coyle. In fact, just one week after the original bet, Coyle suggested they change the terms and offered to get two tattoos.
Well, in case you haven’t been following along, the Jets lost to the Steelers Sunday. Which should have meant we’d get to see some fresh ink on Coyle’s arm last night when the Late Night team uploaded its latest edition of Corrections. Instead, we got this:
Yep, no tattoo. Big man that he is, we can only assume that Meyers took pity on Coyle and let him out of the bet.
Given his love for the Jets, we have to assume that it still must have stung Coyle to have to don a Steelers cap—even if it was just for a comedy bit. But while the switcheroo was in keeping with the looney spirit of Corrections, we’d be lying if we didn’t fess up to being a little bit disappointed.
