Late Night with Seth Meyers closed out a year of change for the show with a subtle tribute to its former house band.
As the credits rolled during Meyers’ show last night—the final episode before an extended holiday break—a slow zoom onto the host’s desk decor focused squarely on his LEGO mini figures of The 8G Band.
Gone but not forgotten: At the end of its last credit roll of 2024, Late Night With Seth Meyers paid tribute to its former house band, which fell victim to NBC budget cuts in August. The LEGO versions of Fred Armisen, Seth Jabour, Syd Butler, and Eli Janney were a gift from Butler, given to Meyers following the band’s departure. Meyers unveiled the addition to his desk during an episode of “Corrections” shortly after their exit.
The LEGO figures have since become a permanent fixture on Meyers’ desk, which also features a rotation of mugs advertising local NBC affiliates, a Stefon nesting doll, and Andy Samberg as a mummy.
Meyers bid farewell to the band in August, two months after it was revealed that NBC budget cuts had forced Late Night to eliminate its house band from the show. Meyers and Late Night showrunner Mike Shoemaker reportedly fought to keep the band to no avail.
The 8G Band’s sendoff iincluded an interview with Armisen, who served as the group’s musical director and rotating drummer. During the sit-down, an emotional Meyers revealed how much The 8G Band had helped him at the start of his Late Night tenure.
“Having you here when this started, I felt very cool to have you guys. And that was a very important thing to feel. But I mostly just felt very safe,” Meyers told Armisen. The group then served as that night’s musical guest, performing a finl song with musician Bob Mould. Although they’re no longer physically in-studio, recorded music from the band remains a fixture on the show.
Late Night with Seth Meyers returns with new episodes in January.
