Scarlett Johansson Poised to Break SNL‘s Female Hosting Record

Scarlett Johansson is set to make Saturday Night Live history.

When she steps onto homebase in Studio 8H May 17th for SNL‘s Season 50 finale, she’ll become the first woman to have hosted the show seven times. (Alec Baldwin holds the overall record for most times hosting, having done so seventeen times since 1990.)

Johansson first hosted the show in 2006, fresh off her starring role in Woody Allen’s Match Point. She last hosted in December 2019, after a year that saw her star in Avengers: Endgame, Jojo Rabbit, and Marriage Story. (The latter two also netted ScarJo Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress, respectively.)

With six turns as host on her résumé to date, Johansson is currently tied with two other women for the title: Drew Barrymore and Tina Fey. Barrymore, who was the first woman to reach the six-timer mark, made brief mention of the feat in her monologue when she reached that milestone on October 10, 2009.

But Barrymore, who also holds the title of youngest-ever host for her 1982 SNL debut at 7 years old, took nearly 27 years to get to six turns as host. Fey, who first hosted in 2008, had hosted six times by May 2018—meaning she completed the feat in just over 10 years.

Johansson’s race to six took just under 14 years. But with the actress set to emcee the show for a seventh time next month, she jumps ahead of Fey to take the title of Saturday Night Live’s most frequent female host all for herself.

That is, at least, until Barrymore or Fey comes back for another go round—and we know Fey is never too far down on Lorne Michaels’ call list.
