One-third of SNL’s in-house comedy trio is taking on a solo side project.
Deadline reports that Please Don’t Destroy’s Ben Marshall is among the guest stars who have signed on to appear in the upcoming season of Poker Face.
The dramedy series created by Rian Johnson and starring Natasha Lyonne, which premiered on Peacock in January 2023, is entering its second season. Poker Face is a throwback to the “mystery of the week” procedurals popularized by Columbo in the 1970s. The series received four Emmy nominations in 2023 for its first season, including one for Lyonne for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
No details on Marshall’s role have been revealed, but he’ll be the second SNL player to appear on the show. Last season, former cast member Tim Meadows appeared in an episode.
The booking marks Marshall’s first high-profile solo gig since joining Saturday Night Live. Until now, his work has been alongside Martin Herlihy and John Higgins, his Please Don’t Destroy partners. The comedy trio joined Saturday Night Live in 2021 as writers, though they also appear in their own pre-taped shorts for the show under the Please Don’t Destroy name.
In 2023, they wrote and starred in their feature film debut, Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain, produced by Judd Apatow. Initially intended for theaters, Universal Pictures switched course and premiered the film on Peacock instead. Last month, the group partnered with Dunkin’ for a social media campaign.
As an SNL writer, Marshall was just nominated for his third Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, alongside the rest of the show’s writing staff.
