SNL‘s ‘Washington’s Dream’ Gets a Threequel in Nate Bargatze Holiday Special

Saturday Night Live fans too eager to wait for Nate Bargatze to host again to get a “Washington’s Dream 3” are in luck. The comedian performs a new version of the sketch on his upcoming CBS Christmas special, alongside two SNL stars—and we’ve got a sneak peek.

In a newly released clip for Nate Bargatze’s Nashville Christmas, the comedian trades his George Washington garb for an angel costume as he announces the birth of Jesus. In a holiday spin on the “Washington’s Dream” format, Bargatze’s angel is seen instituting some of the more nonsensical traditions that come with the Christmas season.

“Let this day be called Christmas, and let it be celebrated each year by gathering with family,” the angel begins. “By doing good will in his name… and by putting a big pine tree in your house.”

The sketch, which also stars SNL cast members Ashley Padilla and Mikey Day as Mary and Joseph, was previously glimpsed in a production photo released last week by CBS.

“God commands the pine tree shall be decorated with glittering glass ornaments of incredible beauty,” the angel tells a confused Mary and Joseph. “Also with garbage that your children make at school.”

It’s not a huge surprise that Bargatze would take inspiration from “Washington’s Dream” for his new special, which is being produced by Lorne Michaels. The sketch was a standout moment from Bargatze’s first time hosting SNL in 2023, and quickly became one of the show’s most viral clips of season 49. It scored a sequel when Bargatze returned to host this past October.

It also so happens that SNL writing partners Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell, the minds behind the “Washington’s Dream” sketches, were brought on to help write Bargatze’s holiday special. After “Washington’s Dream 2” aired, Day and Seidell told Indiewire that they’d be game for a third installment of the sketch. It seems that day is coming sooner than anyone anticipated.

The hour-long Nate Bargatze’s Nashville Christmas airs Thursday, December 19 at 9 PM ET/PT on CBS, and will stream on Paramount+.

I love Nate’s sense of humor. He makes me laugh out loud, Everytime I watch him. How refreshing to watch a comedian who is funny without being vulgar.
