Max Rejiggers Conan O’Brien Must Go Release Plans

Conan O’Brien’s Max travel series has scored an early renewal—or, depending how you look at it, a delayed continuation of Season 2.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced today that Conan O’Brien Must Go has been renewed for a third season, two months ahead of the show’s Season 2 premiere.

For those paying close attention, however, today’s announcement is less a Season 3 pick-up so much as it is a shakeup in the release plan for the show. Conan O’Brien Must Go’s second season was initially set to run for six episodes. Ordered just a month after the series premiered on Max, that count marked an increase from the first season’s four episodes. But per today’s announcement, the second season will now consist of just three episodes.

The streamer did not specify how many episodes have been ordered for Season 3.

The change in plans certainly shouldn’t signal a lack of confidence in O’Brien, who just earned rave reviews in his debut as Oscars host last week. Aside from preparing for that gig since taking it on in November, O’Brien has had a lot on his plate as of late, including losing both of his parents just days apart from one another and evacuating his home as a result of the Los Angeles wildfires. With O’Brien’s busy schedule, the reduced Season 2 may just be a way for Conan O’Brien Must Go to reach fans sooner rather than later.

To coincide with the Season 3 announcement, Max also shared four first-look photos from Season 2 (below), which see O’Brien visit New Zealand (where he cameoed in a soap opera), Austria (where he took the mic in a metal band), and Spain.

“Working with Conan and his team on Conan O’Brien Must Go is the trip of a lifetime,” said Nina Rosenstein, EVP of HBO Programming, Late Night & Specials. “They’re annoyingly brilliant and no one can make locals feel as deeply uncomfortable in their own country as Conan can… this season in lederhosen.”

Conan O’Brien Must Go’s second season is set for release on Max sometime in May.
