ABC’s, NBC’s and CBS’ live coverage of the 2024 Republican National Convention on Wednesday delayed late-night programming start times by roughly 30 minutes, hurting audience averages for several shows (but somehow not others!?).
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was the only program to average more than a million total viewers on Wednesday. Per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data, the July 17 Late Show, which started at 12:03 a.m., averaged 1,382,000 total viewers with 138,000 P18-49. That’s -20% and -24%, respectively, from the day before (July 16); as well as -23% and -7%, respectively, from the previous Wednesday (July 10). Glen Powell, and Charlamagne Tha God joined Colbert on the July 17 Late Show.
NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon started at 12:05 a.m., and went on to average the most P18-49 viewers of any late-night show with 141,000 (per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data). The 141,000 demo average on Wednesday is up +17% from the day before, but -31% from the previous Wednesday. The July 17 Tonight Show also averaged 968,000 total live-plus-same-day viewers, which is -6% from the day before and -21% from the previous Wednesday. Tracy Morgan, and Anthony Ramos made guest appearances on the Wednesday, July 17 edition of The Tonight Show. Clairo performed on the program.
ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! started at 12:07 a.m. ET, and with Anthony Anderson once again at the desk, Wednesday’s episode averaged 940,000 total viewers with 120,000 P18-49, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s +4% and flat, respectively, from the day before; -6% and +11%, respectively, from the previous Wednesday (when Kathryn Hahn guest-hosted the program at its usual start time). Howie Mandel, and Roy Wood Jr., joined Anderson on Wednesday’s Kimmel. The Decembrists performed on the program.
Following The Tonight Show, NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers averaged 676,000 total viewers with 111,000 P18-49 at 1:06 a.m., per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -9% and +5%, respectively, from the day before; -22% and -29%, respectively from the previous Wednesday. Michael Cera, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and James Bay were Meyers’ Late Show guests this past Wednesday. José Medeles sat in with the 8G Band.
Following The Late Show, CBS’ After Midnight averaged 486,000 total viewers with 71,000 P18-49 at 1:05 a.m., per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -11% and -18%, respectively, from the day before; -4% but +11%, respectively, from the previous Wednesday episode. Alaska 5000, Gillian Jacobs, and Chris Fleming participated in the July 17 installment of After Midnight.
Following Kimmel, ABC News’ Nightline averaged 596,000 total viewers with 79,000 P18-49 at 1:09 a.m., per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s +6% and +16%, respectively, from the day before; -6% but +27%, respectively, from the Wednesday prior.
Ronny Chieng guest-hosted the Wednesday, July 17 episode of The Daily Show, and broadcast averaged 472,000 total viewers with 72,000 P18-49 at 11 p.m., per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -14% and -21%, respectively, from the day before (when the show was hosted by Jon Stewart); +26% and +44%, respectively, from the previous Wednesday (co-hosted by Desi Lydic and Jordan Klepper). Scott Galloway was Chieng’s guest on Wednesday’s Daily Show.
