Note: LateNighter generally posts late night daily ratings on a two (business) day delay, which is how they are released by Nielsen.Â
Broadcast TV’s coverage of the 2024 Republican National Convention delayed late-night TV programming start times by 20 minutes on Tuesday, which may explain why nearly all of the shows saw day-to-day and week-to-week ratings declines that night.
Still, someone had to win the late-night ratings race, of course, and CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert managed to take top honors on Tuesday, July 16, marking consecutive days at No. 1 in total viewers and among Adults 18-49.
Per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data, the July 16 edition of The Late Show averaged 1,719,000 total viewers with 182,000 P18-49. That’s -13% and -10%, respectively from the day before; as well as -12% and -24%, respectively, from the previous Tuesday (July 9). Sen. Elizabeth Warren was Colbert’s guest on Tuesday’s episode, and Loudon Wainwright III performed on the program.
NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon averaged 1,029,000 total viewers with 121,000 P18-49 at 11:35 p.m., per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -11% in total viewers, and -40% in P18-49 demo viewers from the day before; -23% and -20%, respectively, from the Tuesday prior. Bobby Flay, and Fran Lebowitz made guest appearances on Tuesday’s Tonight Show. Orlando Leyba performed his stand-up act on the program.
With Anthony Anderson serving as guest host for the second consecutive night, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! averaged a paltry 908,000 total viewers with 120,000 P18-49 this past Tuesday, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -26% and -17%, respectively, from the day before (Anderson’s first night as guest host); -16% and -10%, respectively, from the previous Tuesday (when Kathryn Hahn hosted the program). Lisa Kudrow, and Sam Richardson joined Anderson on Tuesday’s Kimmel. Role Model performed on the program.
Following The Tonight Show, NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers averaged 746,000 total viewers with 106,000 P18-49 at 12:35 a.m., per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -1% and -20%, respectively, from the day before; -3% and -1%, respectively from the previous Tuesday. Natalie Portman, Noah Kahan, and Maika Monroe were Meyers’ Late Show guests this past Tuesday. José Medeles sat in with the 8G Band.
Following The Late Show, CBS’ After Midnight averaged 534,000 total viewers with 87,000 P18-49 at 12:35 a.m., per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s +3% and flat, respectively, from the day before; -21% and -42%, respectively, from the previous Tuesday. Kristen Schaal, Flula Borg, and Leo González all participated in the July 16 episode of After Midnight.
Following Kimmel, ABC News’ Nightline averaged 564,000 total viewers with 68,000 P18-49 at 12:35 a.m., per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -22% and -28%, respectively, from the day before; -9% but +26%, respectively, from the Tuesday prior.
With The Daily Show dark on Monday, Jon Stewart hosted Tuesday’s episode, and brought on his longtime nemesis Bill O’Reilly to discuss all things Trump-Biden and the RNC.
The Stewart-O’Reilly Daily Show averaged 550,000 total viewers and 91,000 P18-49 at 11 p.m. on Tuesday, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s +28% in total viewers, but -6% in P18-49 viewers from the Tuesday before, when Desi Lydic and Jordan Klepper co-hosted the program. The 550,000Â represents the Daily Show‘s largest Tuesday audience of the year to-date, but Stewart’s smallest total live-plus-same-day audience since making his TDS return in February. Of course, that could change once delayed-viewing data arrives in the coming days.
