Late Night Ratings: Tuesday, April 9, 2024

Note: LateNighter generally posts late night daily ratings on a two (business) day delay, which is how they are released by Nielsen.

Conan O’Brien made his highly-anticipated Tonight Show return this past Tuesday, April 9, and consequently gave his former his program a ratings boost in the key P18-49 demographic.

Per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data for April 9, 2024, NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon averaged late night’s second-most P18-49 viewers (246,000). That’s up +46% from the previous day’s episode (Monday, April 8, 2024) and +34% from the previous Tuesday episode (Tuesday, April 2, 2024). Tuesday’s episode delivered a +1% bump in total viewers from the day before, but actually lost -1% in total viewers from the previous Tuesday installment.

In addition to O’Brien—whose most-recent appearance on the show was in 2010 as its host—Fallon’s Tuesday guests were  Nicole Richie, and Liam Gallagher & John Squire.

While O’Brien’s Tonight Show appearance may have captured the late-night headlines, CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert actually won the ratings race, not just in total viewers, but also in the P18-49 demo this past Tuesday.

The Late Show averaged 1,863,000 total viewers and 250,000 P18-49 viewers on Tuesday, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -4% in total viewers but +29% in P18-49 viewers from the previous day’s episode, -11% in total viewers and -19% in P18-49 viewers versus the previous Tuesday episode.

Maren Morris and Demetri Martin were Colbert’s Late Show guests Tuesday.

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! averaged the second-most total viewers at 11:35 p.m. this past Tuesday (1,619,000) and third-most P18-49 viewers (161,000). That’s +18% and -21%, respectively, from the day before, +2% and -20%, respectively, from the previous Tuesday.

Freddie Highmore, Sherri Shepherd, and Madi Diaz & Lennon Stella were Kimmel’s guests this past Tuesday, April 9.

Hitting fast-forward, CBS’ After Midnight averaged the most P18-49 viewers at 12:37 a.m. on Tuesday with 130,000. That’s +23% from the day before, but -25% from the previous Tuesday episode. The program also averaged 636,000 total viewers. That’s less than its ABC and NBC competition, +9% from the day before, but -8% from the Tuesday before.

Loni Love, Jackie Fabulous, and Dan Levy appeared on Taylor Tomlinson’s After Midnight Tuesday.

Late Night with Seth Meyers averaged 775,000 total viewers and 121,000 P18-49 viewers this past Tuesday, per live-plus-same-day Nielsen data. That’s -5% and +11%, respectively, from the day before, -13% and -13%, respectively, from the Tuesday before.

Daniel Radcliffe, Neal Brennan, and George Motz were Meyers’ guests on Tuesday’s Late Night.

ABC News’ half-hour offering Nightline aired an original episode this past Tuesday, which averaged 799,000 total viewers but only 73,000 P18-49 viewers at 12:37 a.m. That represents a +3% gain in total viewers but a -34% decline in P18-49 viewers from the day before, +7% and -25% in those respective measurements versus the previous Tuesday.

Comedy Central’s The Daily Show is being hosted by Michael Kosta on Tuesday through Thursday this week. His Tuesday, April 9 episode averaged 410,000 total viewers and 147,000 P18-49 viewers, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -39% in total viewers, but actually up +16% in P18-49 viewers from yesterday’s Jon Stewart-led episode, -2% in total viewers and +19% in P18-49 viewers from TDS’ most-recent Tuesday episode, hosted by fellow correspondent Desi Lydic.

Alex Garland was Kosta’s guest on Tuesday’s Daily Show, on to promote his new film Civil War, out Friday.
