Audience members waiting in line for Wednesday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! were informed the taping had been canceled just as they were about to be seated — moments before ABC announced it was pulling the late-night program from its schedule indefinitely.
“We were just about to walk in,” said Tommy Williams, who was among the audience members turned away. “They didn’t tell what had happened, they just told us that the show had been cancelled. Initially my concern was I hope everyone’s OK, I hope no one got injured.”
Williams told the Associated Press that the announcement to the waiting audience coincided almost exactly with ABC’s statement that Jimmy Kimmel Live! was being indefinitely preempted.
The abrupt halt came shortly after Nexstar Media Group, one of the largest owners of local TV stations in the U.S., said its ABC affiliates would stop airing the program following a right-wing media uproar over a remark in his Monday night monologue about “the MAGA gang” and its reaction to emerging details about Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer.
According to sources close to the show, Kimmel had intended to clarify his earlier comment and address the growing furor over it on Wednesday night’s show before the taping was canceled. He was last seen leaving the show’s Hollywood studio Wednesday night and has yet to publicly comment on the news.
ABC informed its affiliates Wednesday night that the show would cease production through the rest of this week. For now, the network is airing repeats of Celebrity Family Feud in Kimmel’s timeslot.
