We may never know exactly what he planned to say, but Jimmy Kimmel was apparently preparing to address the mounting backlash against him in his monologue Wednesday night before ABC made the call to pull his show indefinitely.
A furor had been brewing across right-wing media after Kimmel commented in his Monday night monologue that the “MAGA gang” was “trying to characterize this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.”
Citing sources close to the show, Deadline‘s Peter White and Dominic Patten reported late Wednesday that Kimmel had intended to clarify those comments on his Wednesday night broadcast, explaining that he was not calling Kirk’s alleged assassin “one of them” as in a MAGA supporter or Republican, “but rather was highlighting how right-wing supporters were trying to distance themselves from the alleged shooter.”
A subsequent report from Deadline noted that “Kimmel made it clear he was unwilling to apologize for his remarks, according to insiders.” That approach apparently ended up being worrisome for Disney after FCC chair Brendan Carr weighed in and two of ABC’s station groups told the network they intended to stop airing the program.
“Disney felt that if [Kimmel] had doubled down, the company would have been forced to make a more drastic decision on Jimmy Kimmel Live’s future,” Deadline reported.
When the call was made to put Kimmel’s show on indefinite hold, it was reportedly ABC’s hope that he would return to the air soon.
