Jimmy Kimmel delivered a darkly comic but pointed reflection on the state of American democracy on British television Christmas Day.
“Tyranny is booming over here,” the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host explained near the open of his four-minute Alternative Christmas Message on the UK’s Channel 4, warning of accelerating authoritarianism in the United States and recounting his own recent clash with the Trump administration over free speech.
After briefly introducing himself to British audiences unfamiliar with his work—hosting “what you call a chat show (we call it a talk show)”—Kimmel turned to the political climate in the United States, noting that he had recently found himself under direct pressure from the federal government. “You may have read in your colorful newspapers my country’s President would like to shut me up because I don’t adore him in the way he likes to be adored,” he said.
Kimmel described how that pressure escalated into his temporary removal from the air earlier this year. “The American government made a threat against me and the company I work for, and all of a sudden we were off the air,” he recalled, before reframing his eventual return as what he jokingly dubbed a “September miracle.”
That return, Kimmel said, was driven not by corporate benevolence but by a public backlash that extended well beyond his own audience. “Millions and millions of people stood up and said, ‘No, this is not acceptable,’” he said, emphasizing that support came even from people who “never watched my show” or had “said they hate my show.” As a result, he added, “we came back stronger than ever. We won, the President lost.”
From there, Kimmel widened his focus, cautioning British viewers against assuming such conflicts are uniquely American or confined to distant authoritarian regimes. “A government silencing its critics is something that happens in places like Russia, or North Korea, or LA, not the UK,” he said, before undercutting the assumption. “Well, that’s what we thought—and now we’ve got King Donny the Eighth calling for executions. It happens fast.”
The host also invoked recent anti-authoritarian protests in both countries, noting Americans’ historic aversion to monarchy and jokingly assuring viewers, “we have nothing against your king.” Instead, he said, the problem lies with “the guy who thinks he is our king,” as democratic institutions—from the free press to the judiciary—are increasingly under strain.
Kimmel closed on a conciliatory note, acknowledging the global ripple effects of U.S. politics and apologizing directly to international audiences. “We know this is also affecting you, and I just wanted to say sorry,” he said, adding, “we’re not all like him.” Invoking pop-culture shorthand for the so-called special relationship, Kimmel urged viewers abroad not to give up on America. “We’re going through a bit of a wobble right now,” he said. “Give us about three years. Please.”
Since returning to television, Kimmel has continued to be outspoken in his criticism of Donald Trump and his administration, prompting repeated new cries from Trump for his removal. As recently as two days ago—while venting about Kimmel’s CBS counterpart, Stephen Colbert—the president wrote of Kimme, et al: “They all have three things in common: High Salaries, No Talent, REALLY LOW RATINGS.”
Trump went on to suggest that networks airing late-night shows that “are almost 100% Negative to President Donald J. Trump, MAGA, and the Republican Party” should have “their very valuable Broadcast Licenses be terminated.”
Kimmel’s selection to deliver Channel 4’s Alternative Christmas Message places him in a lineage of unconventional figures, including Edward Snowden, Jesse Jackson, Sacha Baron Cohen (in character as Ali G), and Marge Simpson. The annual broadcast, first aired in 1993, was conceived as a provocative alternative to the monarch’s traditional Christmas address, offering viewers a reflection shaped by the defining events of the year.
A Channel 4 spokesperson said the choice of Kimmel was driven by the outsized role U.S. politics has played in global discourse throughout 2025, particularly following Donald Trump’s return to the White House. “Donald Trump’s return to the White House and wide-ranging impact on the world has been the story of 2025,” the spokesperson said, adding that “it would be hard to think of a better person to address it than Jimmy Kimmel, who has found himself on the frontline of America’s battle over free speech.”

Poor Jimmy. Sadly, Mrs. Kimmel’s TDS controls the “narrative” of all of his work.
Believing Kimmel is controlled by his wife! A dumbfuck like you could never have happiness, like Kimmel has, because you feel the need to make people miserable, at your sick twisted pleasure!
Grow up!
Ha! He is. Jimmy has no spine. His wife controls him. Dumb phuck. Not you. Jimmy.
Jimmy Kimmel is seen as a success and a hero for taking on Drumpf! You are seen as a whiny ass loser for reacting like that!
Like I said before. Grow up!
Perfect! Thanks, Jimmy!
Jimmy Kimmel didn’t mention that one of the primary motivations for Disney to bring back Jimmy Kimmel Live was the precipitous nosedive of Disney streaming due to cancelations. Disney had to choose b/t continuing to kiss the President’s butt or not pissing off their customer base. The people won. It’s also worth a mention that Kimmel fought for his people who had worked on the show for decades. If the show didn’t come back on air he wanted his people taken care of. Lastly, the most surprising thing about this whole episode were the people who hated Kimmel, that he’d talked about like dogs, stepped up to defend him. For a brief period of time during utter chaos, it felt like the country was working the way it’s supposed to.
Half Truth at best. Many people with more conservative VALUES canceled in droves. It was not purely Jimmy’s self-induced drama.
Is the reason that Channel 4 hasn’t published the clip to its own social media and YouTube pages because they are concerned about U.S. legal repercussions like the BBC? All recent year’s messages were published to Youtube or Channel 4’s social media pages, but this one is officially only available via the Channel 4 page that requires sign-in and is not accessible outside the U.K.
That was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. Tell me exactly what rights as a U.S. citizen have been taken away by Donald Trump’s administration. I see the Democrats and the left keep trying to take our rights and freedoms away. Free speech, our right to defend ourselves, our right to privacy and use of the internet and praising people who violently attack our law enforcement and assassins who kill others for having a respectful conversation. Just because you don’t like what someone says or it hurts your feelings doesn’t make it wrong. But in the UK you can be arrested for leaning against a wall and thinking. Just ask Isabel Vaughan-Spruce
What a loser!! Says Trump always post. You are on here xmas day too!
You need a muzzle and hands in gloves. How ‘s wife feeling about you these days?
I used to way u and the other guy u were funny but now you’re just a Democrat you’re supposed to be and because you are you’re not seeing the good that Trump is doing you must be a Biden person who let’s all who favored all of the illegals coming into our country driving semis and killing people on our roads that you don’t have a problem with that I guess hey same on you’re not a night comedy funny guy anymore you should just quit now hopefully you’ll be fired if not
Thank you so much for that well spoken message. We need more people to see what an egomaniac we have for a president that thinks the white house is his new summer home to do with as he pleases. Not to mention how he’s been enriching himself, his family and circle while Americans are paying for it. Your such a great person, honest and genuine and we need a positive role model more than ever.
Mr. Kimmel ‘s message was excellent. As Canadians we have been badly hurt by Trump’s dementia. Tarrifs have almost crippled some industries.
Thank you Jimmy and Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you too.
I’m British. Originally from Yorkshire but now living in Surrey.
I look forward to watching your show on You Tube every day when I get home from work.
I’m so relieved that you got your show back.
My sister married an American guy, They live in Seattle, so I take an interest in what’s going on in the US
I do get upset when some Americans imagine that our King acts like DJT.
On behalf of my country (kinda like Kimmel, heh) I would like to apologize to any UK readers or just decent human beings for the trashy deranged comments like Jons, Mike, and that Victor Crab Wannabe poster.
Kimmel’s message was serviceable, a bit flawed when it comes to framing it a win v. lose competitive mentality, but rest assured the US is currently not happy with the current government slapping HIS name everywhere, unproductive and destructive.
You’re most welcome!
Thank you, Jimmy. Stay fearless and truthful. God bless you. God bless our democracy. No Kings in the USA.
I love seeing all of the right wingers getting rage baited by these Latenighter articles
