2006 Comics Unleashed Repeat Tops Fallon, Kimmel in Key Demo

A 20-year-old episode of Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen did something Tuesday night that would have been difficult to imagine when it was taped: it beat both Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight Show among adults 18–49.

At least after midnight.

The Comics Unleashed episode that aired in CBS’ 12:05 a.m. slot Tuesday averaged 113,000 viewers in the advertiser-coveted demo, according to Nielsen Live+Same Day data. That put it ahead of the second half hour of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which drew 111,000 adults 18–49, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, which drew 99,000.

A few important caveats: both Kimmel and Fallon were in repeats, and both shows still easily topped Comics Unleashed in total viewers. Across their full hourlong telecasts, they also remained ahead in the demo.

Still, there’s something striking about what Allen put up against them.

Tuesday’s 12:05 a.m. Comics Unleashed featured Cedric the Entertainer, Jon Lovitz, Rita Rudner, and David Brenner, who died 12 years ago. The episode was produced during the show’s first season in 2006 and has spent nearly two decades in syndication rotation, airing hundreds of times along the way.

Tuesday marked the third time in the last two weeks that one of Allen’s low-cost, evergreen Comics Unleashed episodes has outperformed both Kimmel and Fallon in the key demo.

That’s more or less the scenario Allen built the show for. Before tapings, he famously reminds panelists to avoid topical material, telling them to think of Comics Unleashed like I Love Lucy: the goal is comedy that won’t expire and can be aired indefinitely.

As the calendar has hit the dog days of summer, that philosophy has been paying off. With the more topical late-night shows turning to guest hosts and repeats, Allen has been airing episodes specifically designed to play the same way whether they’re broadcast the week they’re taped or 20 years later.

The result is lower ratings for Fallon and Kimmel, and higher ones for Allen. Tuesday’s 12:05 episode delivered the fourth-best adults 18–49 performance for a “B” episode of Comics Unleashed since the show moved into CBS late night.

And the pattern extends beyond Comics Unleashed. Funny You Should Ask, which occupies Allen’s 12:35 a.m. CBS hour, also beat Late Night with Seth Meyers among adults 18–49 Tuesday, and in fact has done so every night so far this week. Like Comics Unleashed, the syndicated game show was built around a low-cost production model and episodes designed to withstand repeated airings.

Whether the pattern survives Fallon and Kimmel’s return with first-run episodes next Tuesday is another question. But for now, Allen’s evergreen reruns are taking full advantage of late night’s late-summer slowdown.

Allen’s two-hour CBS late-night block is also comparing favorably with the network’s lineup from a year ago, with Tuesday night's combined Comics Unleashed/Funny You Should Ask average topping the network's August 2025 Late Show with Stephen Colbert/After Midnight average by 7% among adults 18–49.
