Inside Bill Maher’s Dinner With Donald Trump

Bill Maher and Donald Trump have yet to comment publicly on their dinner together last night, but Kid Rock says they found common ground.

Kid Rock—who arranged the White House sit-down and attended alongside UFC CEO Dana White—detailed yesterday’s meeting during a pair of interviews this morning, saying the “weirdly awesome” experience “went so well.” As the musician revealed, the meeting even saw Trump solicit Maher’s advice.

“The President even asked him about policy, like what he thought with Iran getting nuclear weapons, and how Israel should react. Bill’s a big supporter of Israel,” the singer told Fox Business’ Stuart Varney.

Despite Maher’s long career in political comedy, the visit was the Real Time host’s first ever to the White House. President Trump gave them a tour of the private residence, including the Lincoln Bedroom, which houses a copy of the Gettysburg Address.

Maher’s meeting with Trump was brokered by Kid Rock after the musician suggested the idea to the late-night host. Maher confirmed that he’d agreed to it during an interview with Kid Rock on his Club Random podcast. But Trump expressed some doubts about the pending meeting. “I really didn’t like the idea much, and don’t like it much now, but thought it would be interesting,” he wrote on Truth Social.

According to Kid Rock, the President expressed that hesitance to him directly as well. “Everyone was a little suspect about it. Even the President had called me a few days ago,” the musician revealed. “He goes ‘What the hell have you got me doing here?’”

The musician explained to Trump that he intended for the meeting to be a chance for both sides to “break bread” and set an example for people across the aisle to “try to be a little nicer to each other.”

And, in the musician’s eyes, that’s just what happened. “It went so well,” he told Varney. “We talked about a lot of things that we had in common. Bill Maher is a big supporter of Trump’s stance on the border, on ending woke-ism.”

Appearing on Fox and Friends, Kid Rock painted a similar portrait of the meeting. “[Maher] has been one of the President’s hardest critics. We came to dinner—me, Bill, Dana White—and it could not have been better. Everyone was so surprised. So pleasant,” he said.

Asked if Maher may have walked away from the dinner liking Trump more, Kid Rock gave a confident affirmation. “Bill even said to me after that, ‘Wow, that was—’” the musician recounted before trailing off.

He continued with his own assessment of the evening: “Everybody’s mind was kinda blown.”

Neither Maher nor Trump have offered their perspectives on the meeting, nor have photographs emerged from the event. “We kind of checked our phones. The President put his phone on a table. The guys kind of took ours,” Kid Rock shared. “The White House took some pictures, which I’m sure they’ll put out at some point.”
