Fallon’s Tonight Show Scores First Emmy Nomination in Six Years

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was once again shut out of the Outstanding Talk Show race—this time edged out by The Daily Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!. But at least this year, it didn’t walk away empty-handed.

NBC’s flagship late-night franchise is among the four nominees in the category of Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama, or Variety Series for The Tonight Show: During Commercial Break.

The digital series—capturing unaired moments that occur between segments when taping is stopped down—typically features outtakes and audience interactions. As the show’s most unscripted content, it often finds Fallon at his loosest and most spontaneous.

If During Commercial Break pulls off a win, it’ll be a hard-earned victory. The series is up against three other late-night contenders: Late Night with Seth MeyersCorrections, The Daily Show: Desi Lydic Foxsplains, and The Rabbit Hole with Jimmy Kimmel.

Fallon personally also has another shot at Emmy gold this year—this time as host of SNL50: The Homecoming Concert, the star-studded live show that launched SNL’s 50th anniversary weekend with a three-hour Peacock stream.

The special is nominated for Outstanding Live Variety Special, with Fallon’s role as host placing him on the short list of potential recipients. He emceed the event live from Radio City Music Hall, memorably winding himself in the opening minutes after leading a raucous Blues Brothers number.

To date, Fallon has been nominated for an Emmy 20 times and has taken home four wins. His most recent came in 2015, when The Tonight Show earned the award for “Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media — Social TV Experience.”
