The Emmys just got even more exciting for Saturday Night Live fans. This Sunday, the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards—hosted by father-and-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy—will celebrate the upcoming milestone 50th season of SNL with a special tribute.
While details about the tribute are sketchy, the awards ceremony is expected to lean heavily into nostalgia. “We want to celebrate SNL’s 50th—we got a great moment there,” Emmys executive producer Jesse Collins told TheWrap. The Hollywood Reporter adds that there will also be a “robust” gathering of SNL alums present.
The 75th Emmys—which took place in January due to last year’s dual Hollywood strikes—included cast reunions for many celebrated shows, including Cheers, The Sopranos, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and All in the Family. This Sunday’s ceremony will include three more reunions: SNL, Happy Days, and one big surprise that producers are keeping under wraps.
“The response to January was incredible, and we felt like people really connected to the nostalgia,” Dionne Harmon, an EP for Jesse Collins Entertainment, shared with Variety. “So, we wanted to figure out a way to bring that nostalgia to the show on Sunday without doing the exact same thing… We’re going to focus on the characters, individual characters from all kinds of shows.”
SNL took home six Creative Arts Emmy Awards last weekend, bringing its overall number of wins to a whopping 101—the most Emmys been won by a single show. With an assist from Beavis and Butt-Head, the Ryan Gosling-hosted episode won Outstanding Makeup, Outstanding Hairstyling, and Outstanding Direction. The show also scored wins for Outstanding Production Design, Outstanding Lighting Design, and Outstanding Technical Direction.
This Sunday, SNL has the chance to win big yet again. In addition its nomination for Outstanding Variety Series, Bowen Yang is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy, Gosling is up for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy, and Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph will face off for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy.
The Primetime Emmy Awards will air Sunday, September 15 on ABC at 8 p.m. ET. The ceremony will also be available to stream on Hulu the following day.
