With a decisive assist from Beavis and Butt-Head, Saturday Night Live won 6 Creative Arts Emmy Awards over the weekend, bringing its overall Emmy haul to a total of 101, the largest number of Emmys ever won by a single show.
SNL, which begins its 50th season on September 28th, was already the winningest show in Emmy history. Game of Thrones is at No. 2, with 59 Emmys overall.
The legendary sketch show owes a special debt of gratitude to Beavis and Butt-Head this year, the standout sketch in its Ryan Gosling-hosted episode, which was its submission in three of its winning categories: Outstanding Makeup, Outstanding Hairstyling, and Outstanding Direction. (It’s been three years since SNL last won in the makeup and hairstyling categories.)
Saturday Night Live also took home Emmy gold for Outstanding Production Design (for its James Brolin-hosted episode), Outstanding Lighting Design (for its Kristen Wiig-hosted episode), and Outstanding Technical Direction (for its Timothée Chalamet-hosted episode).
Last Week Tonight, which will go head-to-head against SNL for Outstanding Variety Series at next weekend’s main Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, continued its own winning streak over the weekend, beating out Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show to take home its ninth consecutive win for Outstanding Writing.
The Daily Show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, Everybody’s in LA With John Mulaney, and Conan O’Brien Must Go also took home Creative Arts Emmys. The Daily Show won Outstanding Picture Editing (Segment) for “The Dailyshowography Of Vivek Ramaswamy: Enter The RamaVerse,” while My Next Guest With David Letterman‘s special with John Mulaney won Outstanding Hosted Non-Fiction Series or Special, Everybody’s in LA With John Mulaney won Outstanding Picture Editing for its “Paranormal” episode, and Conan Must Go won Outstanding Writing For a Nonfiction Special for its Ireland episode.
We’ll find out at next weekend’s Primetime Emmy Awards which shows take win the two big kahuna awards in late night: Outstanding Variety Series and Outstanding Talk Show. Saturday Night Live will get a chance to take home Emmy gold in three other categories as well, with Bowen Yang nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy, Ryan Gosling nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy, and Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph going head-to-head for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy.
The Primetime Emmy Awards air on September 15th on ABC. An edited version of this weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards will air a night earlier on FXX. A complete list of this weekend’s late night Creative Arts Emmy award winners follows below:

Maybe because I’m a writer, but it seems to me that the four most significant awards here were OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A VARIETY SERIES won by Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, HBO; OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A NONFICTION PROGRAM won by Conan O’Brien Must Go, MAX.” Ireland,”; OUTSTANDING HOSTED NONFICTION SERIES OR SPECIAL won by My Next Guest With David Letterman, NETFLIX. John Mulaney; and OUTSTANDING DIRECTING FOR A VARIETY SERIES Saturday Night Live, NBC, Host: Ryan Gosling. Congrats to SNL for their achievements, but you focused on quantity, not quality, in this article.
