First on LateNighter: With The Daily Show off for the holiday tonight, viewers will have to wait another week for Jon Stewart‘s next turn behind the anchor desk.
The Comedy Central series is set to return Tuesday night with Desi Lydic hosting through the rest of the week. Her guests for the week will be announced Tuesday.
Jon Stewart’s return to the show as its Monday-night host this season has easily been the biggest story in late night this year. The comic returned to the show in February, seemingly without missing a beat, and just last month delivered the show its largest audience since 2017.
The show has seen a ratings boost even on nights when Stewart isn’t hosting, with senior members of its “Best F*cking News Team” taking turns hosting Tues-Thurs most weeks.
Stewart’s future with The Daily Show is uncertain. Officially he’s only commited to the show “through the election,” but in interviews he’s hinted that he’s at least considering staying on, noting that his second tenure has left him feeling “reinvigorated.”
He reiterated as much backstage at last month’s Emmy awards, where the long-running Comedy Central program took home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Series. “We’re having a ball,” he told reporters, while showrunner Jen Flanz jokingly offered the possibility of Stewart being forced to stay as the election goes through “recount after recount after recount.”
“We’re looking forward to it being awful,” Stewart added.
The Daily Show airs Monday through Thursday at 11:00 p.m. on Comedy Central and streams next day on Paramount+.
