Reports: Carl Tart to Join SNL Writers’ Room for Season 50

Saturday Night Live looks to be adding a new writer to its ranks.

Though NBC has not officially announced any additions to the SNL writers’ room, comedy insiders report that Carl Tart will be joining the show’s writing staff for its upcoming 50th season. The news was alluded to by actor and comedian Jacquis Neal, who shared a photo of Tart on his Instagram Story.

“Proud of this dude man!” he wrote. “We gonna miss you in LA, but go be a superstar with SNL homie.”

Comedian and Hollywood Handbook podcast co-host Hayes Davenport appeared to confirm the update as he reshared a post from @ThatWeekInSNL on X.

Tart, who co-hosts the podcasts The Flagrant Ones and Foosballz!, is already familiar with a number of SNL players, both current and former.

He has made frequent appearances on Scott Aukerman’s Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast, playing characters such as The Chief from Carmen Sandiego, O.J. Simpson, Italiano Jones, Charles Barkley, and MC Sugar Butt. Many of those appearances came alongside current SNL cast member Ego Nwodim, who herself was a regular on the podcast. (Tart and Nwodim teamed up for the character duo “Bashford and Franklin” on two occasions.)

Tart also served as a writer and co-producer on Kenan, Kenan Thompson’s two-season (Lorne Michaels-produced) NBC sitcom, as well as a story editor on the Andy Samberg-led Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

In 2016, Tart was a featured player on Party Over Here, a Fox sketch show co-created by The Lonely Island. Tart continued his work in sketch comedy as a writer for The CW’s short-lived revival of Mad TV later that year.

Tart is also no stranger to onscreen work for NBC. The comedian was a regular on the network’s sitcom Grand Crew (2021-2023), and voices a character in the Peacock stop-motion series In the Know, which debuted earlier this year.

Late-night fans might also recognize Tart from his two appearances on After Midnight, including the comedy panel show’s second-ever episode.

While NBC has yet to confirm Tart’s hiring, Saturday Night Live has made a number of other changes behind the scenes ahead of its milestone 50th season.

In August, writer Alex English announced that he had been “relieved of [his] duties.” (As another frequent collaborator of Nwodim’s, the addition of Tart—if true—could help balance out English’s absence.) The show also added three new cast members—Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim, and Jane Wickline—as Punkie Johnson, Molly Kearney, and Chloe Troast depart.

SNL’s 50th season kicks off September 28.
