‘Breaks My Heart’: Seth Meyers Talks After Midnight Cancellation

Seth Meyers is lamenting the loss of his 12:35am competitor, After Midnight.

Meyers commented on the CBS show’s impending end in an interview for Deadline’s Contenders Television showcase, calling the cancellation of After Midnight “disappointing.”

Asked about the state of late night—and specifically the loss of After Midnight—Meyers responded, “for every exciting new addition, like with what Mulaney is doing at Netflix, it feels like one or two things falls off.”

After Midnight was cancelled last month after host Taylor Tomlinson opted to step away from the comedy-panel show to focus on her standup career. Despite having initially picked up the show for a third season, CBS then opted to drop the show completely and abandon the 12:35am time slot. That means that, for the first time in thirty years, Meyers’ Late Night franchise will be the only late-night show airing in the late-late slot.

“It always just sort of breaks my heart because this was just such a cool destination for people in comedy,” Meyers said of the 12:35am slot. “You know, I was lucky enough to have this obviously be the step for me after SNL.”

Meyers also recognized the opportunities After Midnight’s unique format brought. “The cool thing that After Midnight was doing was not only did they have a host, it was also a really nice place for three comedians to get to do their thing,” said Meyers. “So, it’s disappointing. It’s never good when comedy platforms go away.”

Stephen Colbert also recently weighed in on the the loss of After Midnight. The CBS host is not only its lead-in, but also executive produces the show.

After Midnight is expected to air its series finale sometime in late June.

Watching 3 comedians do their thing should be put in air quotes, since the writers seemed to provide a lot of the answers in those game show segments. And I’m a fan of the show.

  2. Charles Marcone says:

I watched the show as it followed COLBERT, at first I was funny about it as it was so different, but I REALLY enjoy Taylor and her delivery of comedy. I watch daily or have it on DVR, all the best to her and sorry it is gone.

The late night formula is so incredibly dated and new attempt shows like this are a good idea but really for actual comedians they might as well cut to the chase and just do an hour of back to back rotating stand-ups. Nobody is trying to compete with Netflix on the comedy front.

You can’t put standup comedians together in a game format. That’s like trying to get cats to have a barbeque. Hell, put in a sketch comedy show in the timeslot instead.

While I’m ranting it’s also a shame we don’t have more intelligent game shows like the Brits do with things like IQ.

You say that you can’t combine comedians in a game show and then you go on to cite a great British show. I think you’re overlooking Taskmaster.

      1. Mitch Young says:

Too bad you still have a job Seth. You aren’t funny, you aren’t smart and your entire platform is based on bad mouthing a President who cares more about American than you ever did in your drunkestvsecind.
