Ratings: Will Ferrell Sends SNL Season 51 Out on a High Note

First on LateNighter: Will Ferrell and Paul McCartney helped Saturday Night Live deliver its second-largest audience of the season for its Season 51 finale.

Per Nielsen Live+Same Day data, SNL‘s May 16 episode drew an average of 5.3 million total viewers and 1.1 million among viewers aged 18–49.

That’s a 13% increase in total audience and an 18% jump in the advertiser-coveted demo over last week’s Matt Damon-hosted May 9 episode.

Year-over-year, compared to SNL‘s May 17, 2025 season finale (with host Scarlett Johansson and musical guest Bad Bunny), this weekend’s episode was up 9% in total viewers and up 28% in the demo.

Among the 20 SNL episodes to air this season, Ferrell’s episode ranks No. 2 in total viewers (behind the Ariana Grande-hosted Christmas episode) and No. 3 among viewers aged 18–49 (with only the Christmas episode and the Bad Bunny / Doja Cat season opener faring better).

As always, overall viewership will rise when Live+3 numbers—which include delayed viewing—come in. (For example, per Nielsen, the show’s May 9 episode gained 1.8 million total viewers in the three days following its broadcast, with Live+3 figures topping out at 6.5 million total viewers, while demo viewership grew by 56% to 1.5 million viewers.)

It’s also worth noting that linear ratings are just one piece of the pie, especially among younger viewers. Live+Same Day figures do not include live viewing on Peacock or social media, nor do they account for the show’s YouTube performance, where this weekend’s “Jeffrey Epstein Ghost Cold Open” had accumulated 3.4 million views as of Tuesday afternoon.

Among the headlines to emerge from this weekend’s season finale was a surprise appearance from SNL alum Molly Shannon, and Colin Jost and Michael Che’s lucky No. 13 “Weekend Update” Joke Swap.

Saturday Night Live returns for its 52nd season this fall. The show has not yet officially announced a premiere date.
