With Six Weeks Left, Colbert’s Late Show Shifts Into Endgame

The clock is ticking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert—and if this week is any indication, the show is entering full-on event mode.

With its May 21 finale approaching—and a weeklong hiatus planned for later this month—Stephen Colbert is down to just six weeks of shows. In late night, that’s typically when endgame planning snaps into focus.

To that end, Colbert’s guest list is starting to look less like a typical booking grid and more like a sendoff.

Monday’s show got the ball rolling with Keanu Reeves and Jack White. Tuesday ups the ante: Oprah Winfrey is booked, with Brandi Carlile set to perform. Then on Wednesday, Colbert welcomes one of his most reliable A-list players, Bryan Cranston, alongside rock icon Robert Plant.

Final runs for long-running late-night shows have a history of turning into something bigger—part celebration, part reunion, part victory lap—as seen in the closing stretches of Johnny Carson, David Letterman, and Conan O’Brien, when guest lists doubled as homecomings.

Of course, Colbert’s final stretch arrives with an added layer of intrigue. CBS canceled the show against a charged political backdrop—despite it remaining the most-watched program in the 11:35pm hour—raising the stakes around how these final weeks unfold, and who chooses to be part of them.

The tone for the endgame has already been set, with several guests using their appearances to fete the host—and occasionally tweak his network.

Colbert himself knows a little something about epic finales, having famously produced one for the conclusion of his Comedy Central run.

With a shortened schedule and a calendar already filling up with A-list names, the question now isn’t whether The Late Show will lean into the moment—it’s how big the sendoff becomes, and who else shows up before the curtain falls.
