Donald Trump took to social media late Tuesday night to insult one of his least favorite late-night hosts after hearing what he called “a sick rumor” that NBC has extended Seth Meyers’ contract.
“There is a sick rumor going around that Fake News NBC extended the contract of one of the least talented Late Night television hosts out there, Seth Meyers,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He has no Ratings, Talent, or Intelligence, and the Personality of an insecure child. So, why would Fake News NBC extend this dope’s contract. I don’t know, but I’ll definitely be finding out!!!”
There’s no indication NBC has actually extended Meyers’ deal. With three years still left on his current contract, it would be unusual timing for an extension. Lorne Michaels, who produces Late Night with Seth Meyers, last week expressed optimism but not certainty that Meyers and his lead-in, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, would see through their current contracts.
“I think [Comcast CEO] Brian Roberts—who I will be working for for the rest of my life, who I have very high admiration for—has integrity,” Michaels said. “But at the same time,” he allowed, “everyone has [broadcast] licenses.”
Though Trump has no shortage of perceived enemies in late night, Meyers holds the distinction of being Trump’s longest-tenured antagonist in the time period, dating back to the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, when cameras caught Trump watching stone-faced both Meyers and then-President Obama roasted the then-Apprentice host. Some believe it was that it was his humiliation at that event that led Trump to seriously stage his 2016 run for the White House.
In another late night Truth Social post last fall, Trump railed against Meyers, declaring that NBC’s parent company Comcast should “pay a BIG price” for shows like his, which he termed “political hits.”
Though Trump has since denied playing a role in the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, hosted by another late-night critic he’s frequently targeted, he initially inferred potential influence over the decision, writing, “I hope I played a major part in it.”
Yeah, because his connections at NBC from his “Apprentice” days are still with the company.
This crybaby in Washington has the thinnest skin of any President since Richard Nixon. Say what you will about George W. Bush (and there’s a lot to say), but he was barraged with almost 8 years of “Bush is stupid” jokes from every late night show, and he knew that it was just a part of being the President. Same could be said for almost every other President in modern history.
Anyway, it’ll be great news if the Late Night contract extension is true, especially since Seth and his crew seem to be having a lot of fun making the show. But that’s more copium on my part since I don’t want the 12:30 time slot to completely go away. If there is an extension, maybe we can see a sequel to the Croissant sketch.
