Spon-Con Watch: Jimmy Kimmel Live! for Mint Mobile

Guillermo Rodriguez found a new gig in Brooklyn: Mint Mobile spokesman. The Jimmy Kimmel Live! sidekick appeared in an in-show ad for the company alongside Ryan Reynolds.

“As you just learned, Ryan Reynolds is a very busy person who can’t be everywhere at once,” Jimmy Kimmel told viewers when the show returned from break after Reynolds’ two interview segments. “So fortunately, we have a brand new Mint Mobile spokesman to pick up the slack.”

With that, the host rolled a clip of his longtime security guard standing in front of the familiar Mint Mobile mint-green backdrop. “I’m the new sexy spokesman for Mint Mobile,” Rodriguez declares in the ad. But he can barely get through his spiel about reliable internet before Reynolds attempts to intervene.

“Whether it is bad internet or some stupid actor, nobody likes interruptions,” Rodriguez continues, announcing Mint Mobile’s new offering of 5G home internet.

Well, home mint-ernet, to be precise. Rodriguez, however, can’t grasp the pun, causing Reynolds to grow frustrated enough that a bleep is needed.

The ad parodies the typical Mint Mobile ad format, which feature Reynolds in front of a mint-green backdrop speaking directly to camera. Unsurprisingly, Reynolds joins in on the self-referential fun when Rodriguez tells him to “go home.”

“This is home,” says Reynolds. “I live on this green screen.”

Following the clip, Kimmel revealed that Rodriguez and Reynolds had made up, revealing the pair standing side-by-side on stage.

“To celebrate, Mr. Ryan Reynolds is going to give everyone in the audience free Mint service,” Rodriguez announced to the 2,000-seat opera house where the show is taping this week.

“Thank you. I did not know that,” Reynolds responds, feigning hesitance as Rodriguez adds that the free service will be for a full year.

It’s no surprise Mint Mobile made its way into Monday’s show, as the company is underwriting Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s week-long Brooklyn visit. Reynolds, who owned a 25% stake in the company until its 2024 sale to T-Mobile and has continued to be the face of the brand, was already scheduled to be Kimmel’s lead interview guest last night.

Reynolds and Rodriguez have teamed up for antics before. To promote Red Notice, Reynolds’ interrupted Gal Godot and Dwayne Johnson’s 2023 appearance on JKL to do his own interview with  Rodriguez on the show-within-a-show The Guillermo Show.
