Saturday Night Live fans who can’t wait for next week have a couple of brand-new sketches to hold them over. The show has released two sketches on YouTube that were cut from the live show.
Cut for time in Saturday’s cameo-filled premiere episode was “Blonde Dragon People,” a sketch lampooning the complicated character lists and canons of shows like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The sketch itself had just as many names to remember, bringing two unexpected cameos and some added screen time for one SNL newbie.
Featured player Jane Wickline plays one of the Blonde Dragon People fans tuning into the show. The sketch intercuts their reactions with “clips” from the fictional show itself, staged live by a lineup that included host Jean Smart, musical guest Jelly Roll, and former SNL cast member Andy Samberg, who had already appeared in the episode’s cold open as Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. (Oh, there’s also a dog and a donkey.)
Samberg’s turn as Legolas is actually something of a reprisal for comedian. He also played The Lord of the Rings character in the sketch “Legolas at Taco Bell” when he hosted the Season 39 finale in 2014.
The clip uploaded to YouTube is from Saturday night’s dress rehearsal.
Also released was the pre-taped sketch titled “A Father’s Promise.” The heartwarming story devolves into dysfunction as Andrew Dismukes plays a dad at the precipice of a downward spiral. It’s another sketch that would have given additional airtime to some first-time cast members, with featured player Ashley Padilla getting some lines in and Emil Wakim playing a cop thwarted by Dismukes’ Mario Kart-inspired escape. “A Father’s Promise” hails from writer Auguste White and director Tim Wilkime.
While SNL’s three new cast members managed to get screen time in quite a few sketches that did make air this week, Jelly Roll was unfortunately robbed of his network sketch comedy debut.
