Seth Meyers may go in hard on Mike Scollins’ monologue jokes in “Surprise Inspection,” but he stands behind his writer’s new screenplay.
Meyers and Late Night showrunner Mike Shoemaker are backing Scollins’ feature screenwriting debut, and the project has already wrapped shooting.
Scollins penned the coming-of-age comedy Brian, Variety reports, and Meyers and Shoemaker have signed on as executive producers through their Sethmaker Shoemakers banner, alongside their company’s exec Jason Carden.
Scollins has been a writer for Late Night with Seth Meyers since 2016. Surprise Inspection aside, he may be most familiar to viewers for hosting the show’s recurring segment, “The Scollywood Minute.”
Ben Wang and William H. Macy star in the film, with actor Will Ropp making his feature directorial debut. The film shot was in Oklahoma. Per a synopsis, Brian follows the titular character (Wang) as he runs for class president “in an attempt to get closer to his teacher,” and “attempts to navigate a campaign while keeping his mental health under control” with the help of his therapist (Macy).
“Mike Scollins wrote a movie,” Meyers shared on Instagram Monday. “It kills me to say, but it’s really good.” The Late Night host was riffing on his faux adversarial relationship with Scollins, whom Meyers has taken to task on air over his monologue jokes and that time he wore a tank top in a Zoom work meeting.
Sethmaker Shoemeyers, whose projects include Meyers’ standup specials and The Amber Ruffin Show as well as shows like A.P. Bio, The Awesomes, and Mapleworth Murders, has an overall deal with Universal Studio Group as part of Meyers’ contract with NBCUniversal.
