Seth Meyers isn’t quite ready to declare the end of late-night television—but he’s not pretending the outlook is bright.
In a new interview with Variety’s Ethan Shanfeld, the host of NBC’s Late Night was asked whether he shared Jimmy Kimmel’s increasingly common view: that in ten years, there might not be any late-night hosts at all.
“Unless some major sea change happens, I don’t think there’s going to be a whole new wave of network hosts, in the way there always has been,” Meyers responded. “Nobody understands this business and this format better than Jimmy Kimmel, so when he talks about it, I tend to share his opinion.”
Meyers, now more than a decade into his tenure at Late Night, acknowledged that he was incredibly lucky with his timing—not just landing the show, but also rising through the ranks at SNL when that path still led to something substantial on linear TV.
“It does bum me out that other people won’t have exactly this opportunity,” he said. “Then again, when you think about podcasts, they have just as big of a reach as we ever had.”
That idea—that the spirit of late-night will live on even if the format doesn’t—is one Meyers seems to be making peace with.
“If you’re a great lover of the institution of late-night talk shows, there’s probably some sadness in your future,” he said. “But if you love funny people telling funny jokes and talking to people in interesting ways, that’s always going to be available.”
Not that Meyers plans to step away from his own perch in late night anytime soon. His current contract ends in 2028, and as he noted to Variety, “the network knows that I would like to do it as long as they’ll have me.”
One of my lofty goals when I moved to LA was to become a late night talk show host. I’ve made peace with the fact that I’d have as much luck becoming a variety show host like Ed Sullivan or a host of a radio drama like “The Shadow”.
To settle for hosting podcast is just grim. It feels like (with notable exceptions) every podcast is exactly the same, especially when made for video. It’s all just radio shows with cameras like Howard Stern’s E! show.
There’s some panache and glitz when it’s a big-time TV show, but TV and “big time” hasn’t happened for years when it comes to Late Night. As an example, both Fallon and Meyers have fielded questions from the audience about why they don’t remote episodes from around the country as of recently. There’s no money in taking the entire crew on the road anymore. Such a sad state of affairs indeed.
Also, having the same name as the person who founded the nutty Nation of Islam might have some drawbacks.
