Seth Meyers loves Lorne Michaels too… or whatever.
The Late Night with Seth Meyers host sat down for a chat last night with fellow late-night host Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, where they discussed Meyers’ recent profile in The New York Times.
In the profile, which was published last week, Saturday Night Live creator and de facto NBC late night boss Lorne Michaels shared some (kind of) loving words about Meyers… in his own way.
“He’s an honorable guy,” Michaels said of Meyers in the piece. “I love Seth. Or I care deeply about Seth, or whatever people say now. Definitely, he’s a big part of things for me.”
Elsewhere in the piece, in response to Late Night showrunner (and SNL vet) Michael Shoemaker telling the Times that Meyers is “secretly a brilliant impressionist,” Michaels added “Yeaaah, I wouldn’t go that far. But he’s good enough.”
Speaking with Colbert Thursday night, the Late Night host took the opportunity to clear up any misconceptions. “Lorne Michaels, who, you know, I owe everything to, gave a couple quotes [to The New York Times],” Meyers said. “They’re the most Lorne Michaels quotes. Because they’re very sweet, but if you don’t know him, you would think, ‘Those are super mean!’”
“It means so much to me,” Meyers added of Michaels’ comments, laughing with Colbert.
Of course, Michaels and Meyers’ long history together speaks for itself. Before Michaels hired him to replace Jimmy Fallon as host of NBC’s Late Night franchise, Meyers had held the “Weekend Update” anchor role for longer than anyone else (Colin Jost has since surpassed him). Meyers also continues to hold the record as the third-longest tenured SNL cast member, behind only Kenan Thompson and Darrell Hammond.
Meyers’ latest stand-up special, Seth Meyers: Dad Man Walking, premiered on HBO October 26 and is available to stream now on Max.
