Saturday Night Live viewers nearly got a double dose of Sebastian Maniscalco last week.
The stand-up comedian—whom Marcello Hernández sent up in last weekend’s Glen Powell–hosted episode—revealed Friday morning that he was close to appearing in the sketch himself.
“They asked me to be a part of that,” Maniscalco told Good Morning America. “I couldn’t because I was doing a show in Palm Springs.” Maniscalco is currently wrapping up his “It Ain’t Right” tour and dropped a Hulu special of the same name today.
Still, he’s apparently got his eye on Studio 8H. Maniscalco used his GMA appearance to make a direct appeal to Lorne Michaels, saying he’d love to take the reins as host.
“I’d like to host SNL, if people are out there listening,” he said, turning to the camera. “I’d like to do SNL, if Lorne’s watching.”
When GMA anchor Robin Roberts pressed him for a “30-second elevator pitch,” Maniscalco didn’t bother selling himself. “I think the résumé speaks for itself,” he deadpanned.
Maniscalco gave Hernández’s impression a thumbs-up. “Listen, it’s very flattering that he did that,” he told GMA as a clip rolled. “I thought he did a great job. Obviously, you know, it was really over the top, which made it funnier.”
He did, however, have one tiny note. “He jumped over some guy’s lap in that impersonation,” Maniscalco said of Hernández’s leap over Jeremy Culhane. “And I was actually jealous of his mobility.”

What I would love is for Marcello to do the Sebastian impression a couple more times as a recurring sketch, and then have the real Sebastian confront him either as himself (like when the real Joe Pesci made an appearance on the “Joe Pesci Show” sketch hosted by Jim Breuer as Pesci) or some other character (like when Jim Carrey as Jimmy Stewart insulted Mark McKinney as Carrey… coincidentally on another “Joe Pesci Show” sketch).
