Hulu is finally taking the wraps off Roy Wood Jr‘s new standup special. First announced last summer and taped in September, Roy Wood Jr.: Lonely Flowers is set to hit the streaming service late next week.
“We ain’t gonna make it,” the Daily Show alum says matter-of-factly in a newly-released trailer for the special, which teases jokes about locked-up retail store shelves, self-checkout lanes, the immediate anger triggered by a ringing phone, and other reflections on changing times.
“Account security questions are just us reminiscing about when life was better,” he quips at one point.
Lonely Flowers is Wood’s fourth special overall, but his first for Hulu. He previously released three hours for Comedy Central: Father Figure (2017), No One Loves You (2019), and Imperfect Messenger (2021). Comedy Central has made each of those specials available in full on its YouTube channel.
Imperfect Messenger director C. Craig Patterson returned to direct Lonely Flowers. The performance was taped at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington D.C.
After exiting his role as a correspondent at The Daily Show in 2023, Wood went on to host CNN’s comedy panel show Have I Got News For You, which returns with its second season on Saturday, February 15 at 9pm ET/PT.
Of course, Wood’s standup career long predates his years spent in late-night. He made his network standup debut on The Late Show with David Letterman back in 2006. In 2023, he landed the honor of hosting the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Roy Wood Jr.: Lonely Flowers premieres on Hulu on Friday, January 17. It will stream on Disney+ internationally.
