As the release of Saturday Night ticks closer, a new trailer is offering an extended look at the hotly anticipated SNL biopic.
Released this morning, the trailer features new scenes—including light flirtation between Rosie Shuster (Rachel Sennott) and Dan Aykroyd (Dylan O’Brien), and a control room confused by the awkward antics of Andy Kaufman (Nicholas Braun)—as well as closer looks at characters glimpsed in the first trailer, including Michael O’Donoghue (Tommy Dewey) and George Carlin (Matthew Rhys).
Also seen is a new pre-show conversation between Lorne Michaels (Gabriel LaBelle) and a concerned Dick Ebersol (Cooper Hoffman).
“Did anyone ask Edison what a lightbulb was before he harnessed electricity?,” Michaels asks.
“Who are you in the metaphor?,” a confused Ebersol replies.
The behind-the-scenes account of the first-ever episode of Saturday Night Live is directed by Jason Reitman, who co-wrote the script with Gil Kenan.
Saturday Night premiered at The Telluride Film Festival on September 1 to largely glowing reviews, with critics lauding the film’s pacing and performances. The 40-person ensemble cast includes Lamorne Morris, Ella Hunt, Willem Dafoe, J.K. Simmons, Kaia Gerber, and Jon Batiste.
With awards buzz growing for the film, this weekend Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that it has switched up its release plans for the flick, which was originally set to premiere on October 11.
Saturday Night will now see a platform release, opening in New York City, Los Angeles, and Toronto on September 27—the eve of SNL’s 50th season premiere. A limited release will follow on October 4, followed by a wide release on October 11—49 years to the day that SNL had its first broadcast.
