Lorne Michaels is going to bat for one of the most famous Yankees of all time.
The Saturday Night Live creator and diehard Yankees fan is set to produce Universal’s upcoming Lou Gehrig film, which will reunite star (and one-time SNL host) Glen Powell with his Hit Man collaborator Richard Linklater. Former SNL writer Simon Rich is writing the screenplay, Deadline first reported Wednesday.
Michaels will produce alongside Erin David through Broadway Video under the company’s first-look film deal with Universal.
The still-untitled film represents another entry in a producing résumé that has always stretched considerably further than Studio 8H.
Michaels’ more predictable film credits include Wayne’s World, Coneheads, Tommy Boy, Mean Girls and other projects built around SNL performers or characters. But he has also produced such less obvious titles as the 1994 family film Lassie and Enigma, the 2001 World War II thriller starring Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet.
His stage work has been similarly varied. Michaels produced the 2026 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Schmigadoon!, as well as Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt, which won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Play.
The Gehrig film reunites Michaels with Rich, who joined SNL as a writer in 2007 and remained with the show for four seasons. Michaels later executive produced Rich’s television series Man Seeking Woman, and the two have recently collaborated on the Broadway productions All In: Comedy About Love and its companion, All Out: Comedy About Ambition.
Universal first entered into a first-look film agreement with Michaels and Broadway Video in 2018.
Gehrig spent his entire 17-year career with the Yankees before amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ended his consecutive-games streak and forced his retirement in 1939. The new film does not yet have a production start date.
