Susan Morrison, the longtime New Yorker features editor whose first book, Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live has set tongues wagging since its release a week ago is set to make her late night debut next week.
Although it was written with Michaels’ cooperation, Morrison’s 600 page biography is not, as LateNighter’s Bill Carter pointed out in his review, a hagliography, with some interview subjects offering less than flattering assessments of the SNL creator.
Lorne Michaels himself has yet to offer any comment on the book (it’s not clear whether he’s read it), but Morrison’s booking on the Michaels-produced Late Night with Seth Meyers next week would seem to suggest she remains in his good graces.
Meyers himself was among the dozens of friends, colleagues and associates Morrison interviewed for the book, which was ten years in the making.
Included among the book’s many revelations are new details surrounding the internal revolt at Saturday Night Live over Michaels tapping Donald Trump to host the show in 2016, and Michaels’ unreported 2015 sale of his reported 50% stake in SNL.
The book also offers detailed account of a production week at SNL, with Morrison shadowing Michaels every step of the way through a November 2018 episode hosted by Jonah Hill.
Morrison is set to guest with Meyers next Tuesday, March 4th. Meyers’ other guests that night are set to include Meyers’ fellow alum (and former Late Night musical director) Fred Armisen, and actress Naomi Ackie.
