On Thursday, August 1, NBC preempted The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers for Paris Summer Olympics coverage, while ABC and CBS re-aired old episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and After Midnight in their traditional timeslots. Kimmel and Colbert went on to split first place ratings honors at 11:35 p.m.
CBS aired The Late Show‘s July 17, 2024 episode this past Thursday, and the 11:35 p.m. telecast averaged 1,140,000 total viewers with 150,000 P18-49, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. The Late Show gained +7% in total viewers and +25% in P18-49 viewers from the day before (another rebroadcast); but shed -39% and -42%, respectively, from the previous Thursday episode (a new one).
At the same time, ABC re-aired Jimmy Kimmel Live‘s July 9, 2024 episode, and it averaged 1,078,000 total viewers with a solid 202,000 P18-49. That’s +16% and +70%, respectively, from the day before (another rebroadcast); -6% but +17%, respectively, from the prior Thursday (a new episode).
Following Colbert, CBS re-aired the June 3, 2024 episode of After Midnight. The 12:35 a.m. telecast averaged 433,000 total viewers with 61,000 P18-49, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -3% and +7%, respectively, from the day before (also a rebroadcast); -21% and -32%, respectively, from the previous Thursday (a new episode).
Following Kimmel, a new episode of Nightline averaged 566,000 total viewers with 99,000 P18-49 at 12:35 a.m., per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -1% and +24%, respectively, from the day before; -15% but +25%, respectively, from the Thursday prior.
Over on cable, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show presented a new episode on Thursday. Hosted by Ronny Chieng, the show’s August 1 episode averaged 401,000 total viewers with 73,000 P18-49 at 11 p.m., per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s up +55% and +35%, respectively, from the abnormally-low rated episode on Wednesday; -5% and -3%, respectively, from the most recent Thursday episode (July 18). Former U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger and actress Hong Chau were Chieng’s Daily Show guests for August 1.
